Susan Sykes
Biography

A native New Englander, Susan was transplanted to Baltimore at the age of seven when she started studying at the Maryland Institute of Art on the weekends and by the age of eleven, added two evening classes of learning the oil techniques of Vermeer instructed by young unknown painter Joe Sheppard.

After receiving her B.A. from the University of Maryland, she moved to Georgetown in Washington D.C. to work for her masters at the Corcoran Gallery. Upon her return to Baltimore in 1966, Susan relieved Joe Sheppard as overseer of monthly painting shows in coffee houses and theatres in downtown Baltimore, mounted her first show on the walls of the infamous "Martick's" on Mulberry Street, and and accepted a position as illustrator at the Baltimore Sunpapers.

After a move to Manhattan she worked on Madison Avenue as an illustrator, specializing in television, for twenty five years. At the same time, she was an adjunct instructor at F.I.T. for four years, instructor at the National College of Art and Design at Trinity in Dublin, Ireland and learned the technique of "photorealist" drawing from one of Louis Meisel's original photorealists.

At O.K.Harris Gallery in SoHo, discoverer of and art dealer to Andy Warhol, she had her first show of these drawings. By her second show in 1998, Susan was showing work with the Paul Adelson Gallery in Texas and Irving Galleries in Palm Beach, Florida.

Susan joined the artists at Steven Scott's Gallery during the fall of 2009. She shows on 57th Street in New York City, has been reviewed there, and has been published in American Artist Watercolor Issue, Baltimore Style magazine, Baltimore Examiner, Baltimore Smart Woman magazine, Smart C.E.O. magazine, and featured twice in American Art Collector magazine including the cover in April 2009.
